As of 4:20 PM, June 19th, 2010, the video has been seen 61758013 times on YouTube alone. In May 2008, 7-year old David DeVore Jr. was taken to the dentist to have an extra tooth removed, due to a hereditary condition called hyperdontia. Because this was David's first surgery and his mother could not be there, his father decided to video tape the experience to share with her and their family. After the surgery, David was feeling extra loopy from the anaesthesia he was given. While in the car, he was asking his father questions like "Is this real life?" and "Is this going to be forever?" and also telling him that he had four fingers. Seven months later, David's father uploaded the video on Facebook. Being overwhelmed with people wanting to see the video, he decided to ...

The Pros and Cons of Dental Implants

Dental implants are considered to be "one of the most important advances in dental treatment over the last two decades." Dental implants allow for the replacement of individual teeth and/or a variety of teeth. Dental implants are defined as, "titanium rods about a centimeter long that are placed inside the jawbone and serve the same purpose as the roots of teeth." There are both pros and cons when it comes to dental implants. Patients considering getting them should consider both sides of the coin before making a final decision.

Starting with the pros, dental implants once in place can last a person a lifetime which makes them well worth the money. Dental implants are very practical and look as natural as real teeth. Dental implants look a great deal better than other forms of dental fixtures such as traditional, removable bridges and dentures (which can be both loose fitting in the mouth). Dental implants also feel better in the mouth than do bridges and the biting action of the dental implants is every bit as good, in not better than that of bridges.

Dental implants are excellent in their fit and look very striking. Dentists can replace one, two, three and even more teeth in a patient's mouth or the implant can be used to create supports for dentures. Implants allow a patient to look younger and they can make it possible for bridges to be positioned in the mouth where there is no individual tooth or teeth to connect it to. Dental implants can correct a jaw that is completely toothless. As well dental implants can prevent bone that is toothless from what is called as resorbing (in other words, dissolving and shrinking).

The cons are the downside of dental implants. One of the biggest is the cost of them which is great. Dental implants can run a patient into the thousands. They are a great deal pricier than removable full or partial dentures and fixed bridges. Dental implants are not always covered by insurance policies. It is a very time consuming process that involves frequent visits to the dentist. In the most complicated of cases, patients can be making multiple visits for a period of one to two years.

Dental implant surgery involves a certain degree of pain afterwards as well as bruising and swelling. This will vary from person to person. The false tooth that is positioned on top during the surgery, known as the crown, will likely have to be replaced sometime during a ten to fifteen year period. Dental implants do not always "integrate" or take to a patient's mouth. In other words, sometimes the surgery is a failure. This can depend on a number of different factors, the most common being the type of implant that was used and the overall health of the patient in question. Most often this surgery is a failure when it comes to specific diseases such as diabetes that is not under control for example, as well as in those individuals who smoke. Breakage of dental implants commonly occurs which are definite cons as well as the occurrence of infections inside the mouth.

The Difference Between Inlays-Onlays and Dental Crowns

Inlays, onlays and crowns are all part of what dentists term "indirect restorations." Veneers and bridges are also considered indirect restorations. Fillings are an example of "direct restorations."

Crowns

Crowns (sometimes called "caps") cover the entire tooth, including the sides. Crowns are meant to function like natural teeth and are used to shape, size and strengthen natural teeth as well as enhance their appearance.

Dentists use crowns when a tooth has been weakened by decay, is cracked, severely worn, or missing altogether.

· Crowns can hold a bridge in place when they're placed over the teeth next to the gap

· They give a new surface to misshapen and/or extremely discolored teeth

· When a tooth with a large filling has very little tooth remaining, crowns are used to cover and provide support to the remaining tooth

· A crown can be attached to a dental implant and used to fill the gap left by a missing tooth

Crowns can be made from:

· All porcelain (ceramic)

· Porcelain fused to metal

· Gold alloy

The material is chosen according to where in the mouth the crown will be placed and on the patient's budget. Temporary crowns, made by the dentist in his or her office for the patient to use while waiting on the permanent crown to come back from the lab are generally made from acrylic or stainless steel.

Inlays & Onlays

These are both types of fillings, and are made from porcelain. Inlays are not as large as crowns or onlays, fitting snugly within a tooth's contours (cusps). They are custom made and then affixed permanently into a prepared cavity with dental cement.

Onlays cover some, but not the entire, chewing surface of the tooth and do not cover the entire tooth like a crown.

Both inlays and onlays are stronger than standard fillings, because they are bonded (cemented) to the tooth. Amalgam fillings are not cemented to the tooth, but are packed into the cavity. Being made of metal, they contract and expand in response to substances put in the mouth. This puts destructive pressure on the tooth, weakening it. By contrast, inlays and onlays hold the tooth together, strengthening it and prolonging its life.

Custom Fits Mean at Least Two Visits

Inlays, onlays and crowns are all made from a mold that is sent to a dental laboratory where the actual items are created. They're custom made and require at least two visits to the dentist's office: once for the mold to be taken, and then again to have the item(s) fitted.

All Materials Have Pros & Cons

The materials used to create these indirect restorations have their advantages and their disadvantages. While an all-porcelain restoration offers beautifully natural features, porcelain can fracture (crack) and also cause wear against opposing teeth if its surface is allowed to roughen. Gold alloys are extremely strong and durable; however, the metallic appearance is far from the natural look most people desire.

Knowledge Helps

Crowns, inlays and overlays vary in their uses, the materials from which they are made and in their pricing. Learning more about these differences can help you and your dentist decide which is best for you.

All About the Success Rate of Dental Implants

A dental implant is a process of replacing a missing tooth with an artificial one, this process can dramatically enhance the looks of a person who has lost a tooth for a series of teeth due to an accident, a fight or because of other dental conditions. When a person loses a tooth the consequences are many but for the most part they are social in nature.

What a tooth is missing the functionality of the oral cavity changes in the person may start chewing the food in one side of the mouth which may cause severe wearing of the teeth on that side, if this happens the bite force combined with several other factors will cause malocclusion which is nothing more than a deformity which causes the bite not to function properly.

Amongst the most successful procedures in dentistry we have dental implants, according to recent studies dental implants which or perform on the upper jaw don't have a 90% success rate, this is due to the fact that the upper jaw especially in the back tends to be thinner when compared to the lower jaw. If an implant is put in place in the upper jaw in a position which is not optimal then the implant will fail, in other words osseointegration will not take place.

When it comes to the lower jaw the success rate increases to 95%, this is due to the fact that the lower jaw is thicker than the upper jaw thus it provides more room for the dentist to work with. The implant procedure involves making an orifice in the jawbone which will serve to anchor a special screw which in turn will hold the crown which takes place off the natural tooth, a new technique used by dentist's in order to decrease the osseointegration time records of the implant to be placed in on the area where a tooth has been recently removed, this method successfully increases in the healing process because osseointegration takes place much faster than it would in an area which has been sitting there and had a long time to heal.

After the implant has been put in place and has healed without any complication the real success can be experienced after interaction with friends, family and society. An implant can not only enhance the functionality of the bite of a person who has lost a tooth but it can also be aesthetically pleasing.

Dental Implants - A Consumer's Guide

Dental Implants are a tremendously successful mechanism for replacing missing or badly damaged teeth. They are however costly, and also require a specialist dentist called an implantologist or prosthodontist. Particularly because of the costs involved, implants are one of the most commonly sought treatments by Dental Tourists.

A dental implant is normally a titanium screw that is implanted into the jaw bone to replace the old root. A natural looking crown is then attached to perfectly replicate the missing tooth. Unlike bridgework, implants do not affect the surrounding teeth. Integrated into the jaw, they avoid gum problems and bone loss that can accompany a bridge or dentures.

There is also an alternative use of the implanted screws that allows dentures to be secured permanently to the jaw, thus preventing any accidental movement and improving their overall function.

You might need dental implants if you are missing one or several teeth. Things to watch out for are:

Your jaw may not be suited to implants and a bone graft may be required
The implantation procedure requires unique skills and there are dramatically different levels of training - everything from a weekend to 3 years. Check to see that your dentist has the necessary qualifications
Implants should not be used if your bone growth is not complete
If you are smoker or are taking immune-suppressants the success rate for implants decreases
Ask your dentist what there 5 year success rate is - it should be about 95% for the lower jaw and 90% for the upper jaw

Implants can be placed either at the time of removal of the old tooth or at any time afterwards: the process is quicker if they are placed immediately after removal. Typically this is performed under a local anaesthetic.

The gum and jaw are prepared, creating an opening for the titanium screw. The screw is secured in place and then the gum is stitched over allowing the area to heal. Titanium has unique properties that allow it to integrate naturally with bone.

Over a period of three to six months the titanium and bone merge to form a very strong bed on which a crown or cap can be placed. This period before a final crown is placed can be shortened dramatically if the implant is placed at the time of extraction, to the extent that sometimes a crown can be fitted at the same time as the titanium screw is attached.

There are about 50 different types of implants and the particular type chosen by your dentist will depend on a variety of factors, including their training, their equipment, their stock, your bone density and width of jaw.

There is one other major category of implant, called blade or narrow. These are typically used when the patient's jaw will not support normal implants.

One very important factor in pricing dental implants is that an implant is simply the titanium screw that attaches to the jaw bone. In order for a tooth to be replaced this implant needs a crown. When pricing dental implants, make sure the price includes the price of the required crowns. Things to look out for are:

The Dentist selected to perform the procedure
The type of implant being used
The location of the implant
The number of implants
The type of crown required

Price lists should always be viewed with caution as many factors can increase or decrease the resulting price. Here is a rough price comparison based on the average prices for implants around the world:

USA: $3000 / EUR2000 / £1500

UK: $4000 / EUR2700 / £2000

Hungary: $1600 / EUR1070 / £800

Poland: $800 / EUR600 / £400

Belgium: $3690 / EUR2790 / £1845

Mexico: $1500 / EUR1000 / £750

Costa Rica: $1200 / EUR900 / £600

Thailand: $1200 / EUR900 / £600

Dental implants offer a strong and lasting solution to damaged or missing teeth, and are often the most aesthetically pleasing option too. As with any dental procedure you should always consult with your own dentist before deciding on any given dental treatment.

Instant Dental Implants Or Immediate Load Dental Implants

The latest in the field of tooth implants is the instant dental implants procedure. Also, called as immediate load teeth implants or same-day dental implants, this latest method has been pioneered by Sargon Immediate Tooth Replacement System.

Instant dental implants have an advanced design and are so technically advanced that they are the next generation in the field of implants. With same-day tooth implants there are no waiting periods as in the traditional method. You can have your tooth replaced the same day and walk out with your new tooth implant. The new tooth is as good as your original teeth and you can use them as you would use your normal teeth.

Immediate load teeth implants are a major advancement in the field of dental restorative capability. Compared to the traditional teeth implants that take several visits for the implants to be placed and several more for the crown to be placed. This procedure can take anywhere from 2-6 months depending on how fast your implant heals on the other hand the same day dental implants can be done in a day.

With instant dental implants you can walk out of the surgery in less than a hour with your implant and new tooth. No more ugly gaps in your mouth with the implant screw showing up whenever your smile! The procedure is done under local anesthesia.

Another advantage with the instant tooth implants is that surrounding gums and bones are still healthy and fully available when the implants are placed. In delayed implants the surrounding gums and bones may recede and cause an unnatural looking gum line. The discomfort when putting in the same day teeth implants is also quite low.

People who need their front tooth replaced can opt for instant tooth implants. Many people dread going out with screws sticking out of their gums that too right at the front of their mouth. That can be quite distressing for teenagers and young people forming new friendships and relationships. Instant load teeth implants are true blessing for these people.

Instant dental implants also helps avoid the multiple visits that people have to make to the dentist to get their tooth replaced. It saves time, energy and avoids the anxiety and stress that many people experience when visiting their dentists.

Pulling My Own Tooth Because of the Prohibitive Cost of Dentists

Jersey Channel Islands has no N H S Dentists:

I live in Jersey in the Channel Islands and I can tell you for a fact that there is no financial help for Dentist treatment available in the island, the Hospital do nothing but send you off with a couple of pain killers and tell you to go to a dentist for treatment, end of.

Now a few years ago I cracked a tooth in half, I was in agony; my tooth had split in half right into the gum. I went to the Jersey General Hospital with it; it felt like I had a sharp knife stabbing at the root of my tooth.

After waiting at the hospital for nearly three hours to be seen I was sent away with a couple of morphine tablets and told to go and see a dentist the following morning, they refused point blank to pull the tooth out for me and to be honest this is really in my opinion what they should have done. I couldn't believe that any hospital or Doctor could be so callous as to send anyone away from their doors in such obvious agony, when simply pulling the tooth out would have cured the problem, I mean just how long would this have taken them, and I couldn't help thinking how such a wealthy island could really be so penny pinching, especially as I had told them that there was no way I could afford to go to the dentist. Our Dentist prices are from what I have seen on the internet price guides around three times what they are on the mainland (England) UK!

I went home took the morphine tables and waited for them to kick in, at this point I was in so much pain with this split in half to the base of my gum tooth that I would have done anything to kill the pain. It really was that horrendous that the pain actually made me physically sick.

After the morphine kicked in I got a pair of my husbands pliers and literally yanked the offending half of the tooth out myself. There was blood everywhere, but believe it or not the relief I felt in getting rid of this offending half tooth was incredible.

I told a Jersey States member of Government in the Royal Square about what I had had to do and showed him the half tooth, which I had taken with me in a plastic bag. He said he would look into it and see something was done about this situation for the future. What did he do nothing the same situation exists to date!

I saved up a bit each week for the following two years for the day the rest of this offending tooth rotted out, and I had to actually go to the dentist and have it pulled out completely, I had to live with constant pain from it, along with the fact I could not chew on this side of my mouth for that period of time. At the time I had to go to the dentist and have the rest of this tooth pulled out I still hadn't managed to save enough to cover the cost and had to make a payment plan with the dentist for the remained of the cost.

The dentist told me that had I come to him when my tooth splintered in the first place he would have been able to save the tooth, now I have a gap in my teeth, why purely because of the prohibitive cost of going to the dentist, and the fact that the Government has done nothing about this situation.

I am not alone and I find it a totally unacceptable in a tax haven that nothing has or is being done abut it!

The Strangest Contact Lens - A Tooth Contact Lens Used by Eye Doctors to Restore Vision

From the strange realms of the eye world comes a new procedure where a tooth is pulled from a patients mouth and inserted into their eye. Even though it sounds like a scene from Rocky Mountain Horror Show, it is a serious new technique that may help restore vision to a number of people who are functionally blind.

A patient's tooth is extracted, drilled with a central channel, and a lens is attached to the tooth. After growing in the patients cheek or shoulder for a month or so it is implanted in the eye in cases where a corneal transplant is not possible. The tooth is a good medium and can thrive on the nutrients supplied to it by the eye tissues.

Performed at The Palmer Eye Institute, one of the leading Eye Hospitals in the world, the procedures was recently performed by a corneal eye specialist, Dr Perez, M.D. assisted by a dentist Dr. Sawatari, D.D.S.

This procedure was initially developed in Italy. The last few years Italian Dentistry has purportedly been moving closer to the dental practices used in Northern America and Northern Europe. I'm not quite sure what that implies; all of the dentists I have seen in North America tend to leave teeth in the mouth instead of moving them onto cheeks or shoulders. I even checked implant dentists and still haven't found a thing about eyeteeth. Tongue in cheek (or tooth), the early results look promising for the small group of people who can really benefit from this unique procedure that has come about though a creative approach for people who had few options for usable vision.

The down side is all of the baby boomers who in 20 to 30 years will be toothless with dentures, There could be a whole new dark side to the tooth fairy. And a root canal in an eye tooth could raise fear of dentists to a new level.

What is the Best Procedure to Replace a Single Missing Tooth?

The three most common options in replacing a missing tooth are removable dentures, bridges and dental implants. Removable dentures are traditionally comprised of a replacement tooth or teeth which are attached to a pink colored plastic base which serves as the gum. A metal framework is then attached to the teeth-gum set-up. The dentures are connected to the natural teeth surrounding it by metal clasps to keep it in place. To get used of this method may take some weeks until the uneasiness is gone. Dentures alter the environment inside the mouth which builds up plaque deposits.

A bridge is another common way of replacing a missing tooth. In this process, the teeth which will be supporting the bridges are cut down which is a major disadvantage of this method. It is also not easy to clean the parts of the teeth under the bridge which may result to decay.

A dental implant is a replacement of synthetic root tooth. This method is considered to be the best treatment of choice in filling in a missing tooth. The most common practice which uses titanium to bind into the jawbone was discovered by Per-Ingvar Branemark, a Swedish Professor. The titanium screws placed into the jawbone ensure the permanent placement of the new tooth.

Tooth implant is under the cosmetic dentistry category. Implants are proven to be more durable than dentures and bridges. It is valued as the best and a permanent answer to tooth loss. It reestablishes all important functions of a real tooth like chewing, biting and grinding food. Dental implants look and feel real and are permanent as they are fixed with the jawbone. While dentures do not make it easier for a person to speak, it is never a case when it comes to implants. One can talk and communicate confidently with people without any trouble of thinking that it might slip off your mouth.

As it functions like a natural tooth, one can expect comfort having it. Implants give you the chance to smile again with great self-esteem knowing that people will not even know your tooth is just implanted. Bridges and dentures result to plaque and tooth decay later on while dental implants improve oral health. Implants do not require cutting off other teeth and will not disturb other teeth next to it thus promoting oral hygiene.

Dental implants undergo two procedures. First if the preparation of the jaw where the new tooth will be fused. This is when a little hole is drilled in a specific part of the jawbone. This hole will lead the titanium screw in place. Second stage is the placement of the implant. In this specific stage, the little hole will be broadened to admit the insertion of the screw. Another screw will then be put above it as protection cover giving the dental implant the chance to heal. After some months, the cover is taken off and is replaced with an impermanent crown which will then be replaced by a permanent crown after in the right time. It does take time to finish the whole treatment but it is surely worth it.

Anyone who is healthy enough to undergo dental implant surgery can avail of this method. Patients should also have healthy gums, strong jawbone and enough bone to support the implant. To achieve best results, the patient is also expected to comply with the dentist's directions and should see their doctor during the routine check-ups.

What is the Cost of Dental Implants, Approximately?

Cost of dental implants will vary quite a bit depending on where you live, the experience of the dentist, the amount of work needed for your teeth, the importance of the particular tooth and so on.

For example in Texas the Cost of dental implant is usually between $1800.00 - 2500.00 and the crown that goes on top of the tooth implant with an abutment kit is about $1200.00 - $2800.00. It really depends on where you live even in Texas. In Dallas, Houston the teeth implant cost would be higher whereas in the smaller towns it would be much less expensive. So the total would run you $3000.00 - $5300.00.

On the East coast of the US the abutment and crown will cost anywhere between $1,200-$1,800 and the tooth implant itself will cost anywhere between $1,200 - $2000 per tooth.

On average Cost of dental implant is $1,500-2,500 USD per tooth without the additional crown. But, depending on your teeth additional costs for things such as a posterior mandible or bone regeneration, sinus elevation, and wide diameter or narrow diameter implants can quickly escalate the costs involved to as much as $15,000 to $30,000 for the complete procedure for the upper or lower jaw.

It really does depend on the tooth. A front tooth or an important tooth like a molar will be much more costly than a tooth that is not that "important".

In Mexico, East European countries and India the Cost of dental implant is much cheaper than what you will pay in the US. The Cost of teeth implant can be less than half of what it costs in the US.

In the UK a single Cost of dental implant will be around £2000. Tooth implants will involves several trips to the dentist over a year or so. They have to screw metal screws into your bone and the gums have to heal before the implant can be fitted.

In the UK in the National Health Scheme you can get tooth implant only if you go to a teaching hospital and there is always a long waiting list for dental implants. A crown on National Health Scheme is £189.00 but most dentist only do it privately about £400.00. Cost of dental implant will be about £1500.00-£2000.

Dental Implants - An Ideal Way to Repair a Smile

Many people have experienced the loss of teeth due to a variety of reasons. This can lead to embarrassment or discomfort and even difficulty eating. Dental implants are an ideal way to counter tooth loss. The procedure is categorized as a form of prosthetic dentistry and cosmetic dentistry at the same time.

Any individual who has undergone the loss of teeth has a variety of restorative options for the treatment of missing teeth. While they all work to a degree, no method has proven to be as functionally effective and durable as implants. They are so durable that, in many cases, they may be the only logical choice for the restoration of all necessary functionality of the teeth and supporting structures.

Teeth are lost through a variety of causes. These include:

- Tooth decay
- Root canal failure
- Periodontis/gum disease
- Trauma to the mouth
- Excessive wear and tear
- Birth Defects

The advantages of implant dentistry are numerous. For starters, the implants are stronger and more durable than restorative counterparts like bridges and dentures. Next, implants are a permanent solution to tooth loss. Furthermore, implants can be used with other restorative procedures for maximum effectiveness. As an example, a single implant can serve to support a crown replacing a single missing tooth. Implants can also be used to support a dental bridge or with dentures to increase stability and reduce gum tissue irritation.

Recent procedural advancements, like narrower mini implants, mean that more people are candidates for implants than ever before. While this is true, candidacy still varies so a dentist may determine that a patient should opt for an alternative restoration. Also, dentists do not need a specific license in order to perform implant dentistry. Prosthodontists are the specialists who often perform this procedure. Periodontists and oral surgeons perform the implant surgical procedure itself.

The dental implant process begins with preparing the jaw. A small diameter hole is drilled where there is not a tooth in order to guide the titanium screw that holds a dental implant in place. Once the screw is in place, it is given time to mold with the jaw. During this time, a protective cover screw is placed to allow the site to heal.

After several months, the cover is removed and a temporary crown is placed on top of the implant. The temporary crown acts as a guide for the gum to grow and shape itself in a natural way. The process is complete when the temporary crown is replaced with the permanent crown.

Dental Insurance to Cover the Cost of Dental Implants

Consider a few things. Have you spoken at length with your dentist about the procedure, what it involves, and getting down to the nitty gritty, what it will cost, including taxes, down to the last penny? If you presently do not have any kind of dental insurance, bear in mind that once you sign a policy with a company many plans clearly state that you must wait a year before you go ahead with any dental work. An option is to look to a dental HMO as many do not have any waiting periods whatsoever (or some do but it might be only a matter of months as opposed to a year). If you have an insurance policy that covers
dental work then congratulations, but look at your policy very closely and carefully as many policies cover such procedures as regular check ups, cleanings, fillings and extractions but not cosmetic procedures such as orthodontics and dental implants. Don't find yourself in a no-win situation by not doing your homework ahead of time.

Check you policy and see what it does (and does not) cover before you schedule an appointment for dental implant surgery. Some insurance policies do not cover conditions that were pre-existing before the policy began (for instance, broken or missing teeth), while others pay a certain amount or in some cases, pay for the "least expensive alternative treatment" (abbreviated to LEAT), according to the guidelines set down by the insurance company.

If you are considering choosing a new insurance plan and/or selecting one for the first time, you need to ask yourself a number of relevant questions found below.

First of all, if it is a plan that is offered by your workplace, are you as an employee allowed to pick your own dentist or will he/she be chosen for you? Secondly, is the kind of dental treatment you choose to undergo decided upon by yourself as the patient and the dentist, or there is a third party involved in the decision making process? Thirdly, does the insurance plan in question cover such services as diagnostic, emergency and preventative care? Preventative care would cover such things as fluoride treatments and sealants. Also would full-mouth x-rays be covered by the plan? (One a year? Two?)

The next question would be, what kind of routine dental work is covered under the policy? Are these types of dental work done- bridges, braces, crowns, root canals, treatment for periodontal disease and oral surgery? Does the insurance plan cover dental implants, dentures or treatment for temporomandibular disorders? If it does then how much does it cover in terms of percentages? Is emergency dental work covered by the dental plan? Finally, does the plan address referrals that come from dental specialists? Can a specialist be chosen by the patient or not?

Benefits of Dental Implants

In the past a missing tooth usually meant going to the dentist to be fitted for a bridge or a denture. This usually meant time without your tooth while you bridge was being made, then a life time of messy denture adhesives, and dealing with the pain of seeds and food particles becoming wedged between the denture and your gums. Fortunately, this is a thing of the past.

You have the advantage of being able to get a dental implant to replace a missing tooth. As long as the bone structure in your jaw is in reasonably good health, you can have a crown in place in just one visit. That means you will not have to wait while a replacement is being constructed, you will be able to resume your normal life without having to avoid certain foods, or being afraid to flash a nice smile.

Because a dental implant is a permanent solution, you will not have to mess with denture adhesives, or with special cleaning solutions. You will clean it with brushing and flossing, just like with your regular teeth. In fact, a crown will look, feel and function like the rest of your teeth. Most of the time you will forget that one of your teeth is not real.

Because the implant essentially becomes fused to your jaw bone, it will feel like your other teeth. It is matched to the color and size of your normal teeth, so it will look natural in your mouth. It will also function like the rest of your teeth; you will be able to eat the foods you want to eat.

One of the complaints of denture wearers is that it is more difficult to maintain a healthy diet because many fruits and vegetables are more difficult to eat. Berries are off the diet because of the seeds, and so is corn. Dental implants will allow you to eat all of these, plus a lot more.

The best part is, the procedure isn't any more painful that getting a filling. It is done with a local anesthetic, like Novocain, and you will receive a temporary crown on the day the implant is put in. Within a couple of months you will receive your permanent crown, and in most cases, you are through. For many people the implant will last the rest of their lives.

You don't have to put up with messy, uncomfortable temporary solutions to a missing tooth. You don't have to be afraid to smile, or to eat in public. A dental implant will allow you to enjoy your life like you did before you lost your tooth.

What is a Dental Implant?

Dental implants consist of a titanium rod which is surgically inserted into the jawbone at the site of the tooth being replaces; a metal extension attached to the titanium rod once the rod has fused with the jawbone, and the prosthetic ceramic tooth which is attached to the metal extension after a cast is made of the patient' teeth so that the prosthesis can be molded to fit perfectly.

Titanium, because it is an inert metal, is the metal of choice for a dental implant. Titanium, unlike the steel used in early implants with disastrous results, does not trigger the body's rejection response, and will fuse into the jawbone with no negative side effects. A titanium based dental implant, in fact, will actually strengthen the jawbone because the stress of biting and chewing with the implant will increase the bone's density.

Who Should Not Consider A Dental Implant?

If you are capable of getting through a tooth extraction without complications, you can probably handle a dental implant. If, on the other hand, you have any chronic medical conditions like cardiovascular disease or diabetes; are a smoker; have gum disease; or have undergone radiation therapy on your neck or head, you will need to be evaluated more closely to determine if a dental implant is a good idea.

The success rates of dental implants depend on the location of the teeth they are replacing, with a dental implant which replaces at lower front tooth having a higher chance of succeeding than a dental implant replacing an upper rear tooth. Lower front dental implants will succeed in 19 of every 20 cases, while upper rear dental implants succeed in 17 of 20 cases.

The Dental Implant Procedure

The dental implant procedure will normally occur in three phases over nine months to a year. In the first phase the dental surgeon will make an incision in the gum where the tooth is to be replace, drill a hole in the jawbone, and insert the titanium rod for the dental implant. The patient will then heal for three to six months, while the jawbone and implant rod fuse.

The second phase of the Dental implant process will be when the dental surgeon attaches the extension to the titanium rod below the gumline, and takes a cast of the patient's mouth from which a mold can be made for the ceramic prosthetic tooth.

Dental implants are an ideal solution for those who no longer want to struggle to maintain deteriorating teeth, or who are tired of the discomfort of trying to chew with poorly fitting bridges and dentures. Even at a cost of $1000 to $2500, a dental implant can be a good investment over time as it eliminates the need to maintain and replace dentures.

Dental Implant Bone Graft - Is it Necessary?

No, not really. Not everyone needs dental implant bone grafts. Whether you need tooth implant bone grafts will be decided by your dentist after checking your jaws. If you have sufficient amount of bone and bone height then you won't need teeth implant bone graft.

How long does bone graft take to heal?

Normally the grafts takes 3-6 months to heal.

Are they different types of grafts for tooth implants?

There are several types of grafts. You could have an extraction site graft, a sinus lift graft, ridge widening graft.

Is it painful to get one?

Yes, it is a painful procedure. So, usually it will be performed under local anesthesia. So, you won't feel the pain during the procedure. Post surgery the dentist will usually prescribe antibiotics and pain killers. You should be fine. It takes up to 6 months to heal but the pain usually go away after a week or so.

Only if you catch an infection does it really become painful. You will need to see your dentist if you do.

Is bone graft for teeth implant safe? Is it an effective procedure?

Dental implants bone graft are a safe procedure. This is done when the patient lacks sufficient bone to place an implant. Yes, it is an effective procedure both for restoring function and aesthetics of the patient.

What's the success rate of a tooth implants bone graft? How likely is it that the graft will take, grow, and allows for successful implant procedure a few months later?

The success rate is at least 90 - 95% for dental implant bone grafts. A few things that can cause failure include age, osteoporosis, smoking, uncontrolled diabetes, existing infection in your gums and any autoimmune condition you might have.

Tooth Whitening - What is Tooth Whitening Anyways?

Do you know what tooth whitening stands for? Well, in case you are not familiar with the term tooth whitening, you need to try and read this article. In this passage, we would try and explain the meaning as well as the significance of whitening teeth from home or a dental clinic.

1. It Is A Natural Stain Remover

The main purpose of whitening your tooth is to remove the stains from your teeth. Owing to your ill eating habits, you tend to get a layer of yellow on the outer surface of your tooth. If this is not removed, your teeth start looking ugly and you would also have difficulty in smiling confidently.

2. It Is A Natural Disinfectant

If you thought that whitening your tooth was merely limited to removing yellow stains, you need to think twice. In reality, a home based teeth whitener works as a natural anti septic agent. They not only remove the hard yellow stains from the surface of your tooth, they also wipe out the harmful bacterium which is present in and around your gum area.

3. It Is Cost Effective

A home based teeth whitening procedure is cost effective. If you compare it with a visit to the local dentist, the process is almost free. Home based teeth whiteners are affordable and they also whiten your teeth in minutes. Hence, you save your precious time from getting wasted.

Tooth whitening is a process of removing hard yellow stains from the surface of your tooth, removing bad bacteria from your gums and maintaining a clean pair of teeth at no extra charge. It is the most effective way of maintaining a 'sparkling white smile'.

Steps to Successful Tooth Implants

Dental implants are artificial roots and teeth placed directly into the jaw (by a periodontist). Dental implants are great for people who are in good health, but, who have lost teeth due to any number of misfortunes. Implants are very natural looking and feel almost exactly like "regular teeth" when you bite or chew food.

With normal conditions and proper patient maintenance, dental implants can last a lifetime. Since they are connected to the gums and bone in your mouth, a periodontist will be the primary member of any tooth implant team (as they deal with gums). They will usually give you an initial consultation, and let you know where the implant will be placed. Depending on the type of implants you wish to use, and, your mouth's current condition, the periodontist will create a custom tailored treatment plan. Many things can alter this plan. For instance, will you be replacing a single tooth, or several teeth?

Single tooth replacement can be carried out with an implant and a dental crown. This procedure replaces not only the tooth, but also the tooth's root. It also carries a number of advantages over other options; it looks like a natural tooth, and, the implant can be placed in the mouth without harming neighboring teeth. Since the dental implant replaces the root in addition to the crown, your bone usually remains intact. In the long run, a single tooth replacement can be easier to keep clean than a dental bridge, and, your gums will not recede around the metal. Single tooth implant is a great option.

When replacing multiple teeth or an entire mouthful, a dental bridge is usually necessary. These bridges will replace both your lost and natural teeth, and, many of the roots. First, implants that look like screws are placed within your jaw and left to heal. A few months later, the implants and bone will have usually bonded together. Next, abutments (small metal posts) are installed to complete the foundation. Your gums are then allotted a few weeks to heal before the process continues. Finally, bridges (or replacement teeth rows) will be created for you, and installed by your periodontist. These replacements are attached to the before mentioned abutments.

After your implants have been installed the recovery process begins. Full recovery and healing usually takes about 3-6 weeks - this of course, will depend on the number and type of dental implants used in your procedure - the more implant, the longer the healing time. To combat the pains of healing, one should avoid smoking cigarettes and drinking through a straw. Doing either can decrease blood supply to the tooth area and potentially cause dry socket. It can also be beneficial to use ibuprofen, which will decrease swelling and ease pain. Proper oral hygiene and the use of a mouthwash will keep the implant areas clean and sterile while you heal.

Question

islandgo... asks: (1 month ago)
I've been missing an incisor for a while and it's become a huge insecurity of mine because there's an obvious gap between my teeth. I really want to get this done, but I don't know how much it'll cost. And also, I want to find out if there are other options too if it turns out to be too expensive for me.

Answers

Tarnished Angel: (1 month ago)
The average cost of a dental implant is $2,600+$900 for the crown 6 months down the road. In the interim of your 6 month implant process they will make you a flipper(like a retainer with a tooth attached.) Your other options include a bridge (3 crowns fused together suspending the missing tooth in the middle) this is on overage $900 per tooth ($2,700 total) or a partial denture--which is pretty unusual to replace only one missing tooth, but can be done I suppose.

Your BEST option would be to actually consult with a dentist to get the correct pricing for your area. You may also have insurance to factor in to the out of pocket portion you need to actually pay. They may also have payment plans to suit your needs. A popular on out there is called Care Credit.

cryptedc...: (1 month ago)
I'm going through the implant process right now, and the best thing you can do is ask around, and get different opinions about how much work you need. One dentist gave me an estimate of 3,500/implant, another can do them for 2,500. Insurance doesn't usually cover it, but in addition to CareCredit, Springstone is another financing company that might help.
